10 Scripture Blessings for Mothers

By Melissa McLaughlin

How do you thank a mother?

How do you thank someone who held you, nursed you, and cared for you when you could not care for yourself?

How do you thank a mother?

No mother is ever perfect, of course. But a godly mother’s love is strong, self-sacrificing, and desires the best for us- God’s best.

Perhaps you were raised and loved by a biological mother, adoptive mother, stepmother, or foster mother. Maybe you experienced love through a grandmother, aunt, friend, or spiritual mother. No matter the form of mother God placed in our lives, we thank God for these special mothers and for the gift of a mother’s love.

Remembering a Mother’s Love

We remember

  • every meal she made to nourish our bodies
  • every bedtime story she read to buoy our spirits
  • every Sunday she drove us to church to learn about Jesus
  • every doctor visit and loss of sleep to care for us when we were sick
  • every scraped knee she kissed and every tear she dried, soothing our souls
  • every self-sacrifice she made, laying down her own life, to take care of us instead

Every reminder to

  • take turns and share
  • eat our vegetables
  • do our homework
  • brush our teeth
  • turn off the TV
  • say “I’m sorry”
  • play outside for fresh air, sunshine and exercise
  • go to bed and get a good night’s rest
  • say our prayers

How do you thank a mother?

Give her a blessing. A blessing of your time and a blessing of your prayers. This is a gift that lasts for all eternity.

*Photo at the top is a lilac. Lilacs were one of my grandmother’s favorite and she had a large bush in front of her house offering fragrant joy each spring. We were also blessed to have a large lilac bush growing at the edge of our property growing up. My mom would pick huge bouquets to grace our kitchen table and we breathed in the sweet scent of love’s memories.
