How do you thank a mother?

How do you thank someone who held you, nursed you and cared for you when you could not care for yourself?

How do you thank a mother?

No mother is ever perfect, of course. But a Godly mother’s love is strong, self-sacrificing and desires the best for us… God’s best.

Perhaps you were raised and loved by a biological mother, adoptive mother, stepmother or foster mother. Maybe you experienced love through a grandmother, aunt, friend or spiritual mother. No matter the form of mother God placed in our lives, we thank God for these special mothers and for the gift of a mother’s love.

Remembering a Mother’s Love

We remember

  • every meal she made to nourish our bodies
  • every bedtime story she read to buoy our spirits
  • every Sunday she drove us to church to learn about Jesus
  • every doctor visit and loss of sleep to care for us when we were sick
  • every scraped knee she kissed and every tear she dried, soothing our souls
  • every self-sacrifice she made, laying down her own life, to take care of us instead

Every reminder to

  • take turns and share
  • eat our vegetables
  • do our homework
  • brush our teeth
  • turn off the TV
  • say “I’m sorry”
  • play outside for fresh air, sunshine and exercise
  • go to bed and get a good night’s rest
  • say our prayers

How do you thank a mother?

Give her a blessing. A blessing of your time and a blessing of your prayers. This is a gift that lasts for all eternity.

10 Scripture Blessings for Mothers

Below are 10 scripture blessings to pray over your mother or mother figures in your life. If your mother is no longer living, consider other women you could bless with these scripture prayers. If you are a husband, pray these over your wife. If you are a mother, you can pray these blessings over yourself, too!

I encourage you to read slowly, pause in stillness and pray each blessing over your mom and other women who have blessed your life with God’s love.

10 Scripture Blessings

1. The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.  Numbers 6:24-26 (ESV)

2. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Ephesians 1:3 (ESV)

3. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Proverbs 31:28 (ESV)

10 Scripture Blessings for Mothers

*Photo at the top is a lilac. Lilacs were one of my grandmother’s favorite and she had a large bush in front of her house offering fragrant joy each spring. We were also blessed to have a large lilac bush growing at the edge of our property growing up. My mom would pick huge bouquets to grace our kitchen table and we breathed in the sweet scent of love’s memories.
