Poem: Undiminished

By Melissa McLaughlin

God of eternity,

Brilliance of heaven,

Blazing shimmers of transcendent spark,

Unrestrained flashes, swirling flames, eclipsing Northern lights.

For time immemorial,

Generation upon generation,

Basked in celestial wonders of endless rippling,

Yesterday, today, and a thousand tomorrows.

You are untouched,

Unmarred,

Untarnished,

By creaking bones, rusty corrosion, or decay’s malodorous stench.

Undiminished

By the calendar’s yearly turn,

Or the season’s spinning summons.

The train of Your robe billows before all, above all, beyond all.

Your voice calls the universe to attention.

Every galaxy, every molecule,

Bows at Your command,

Resounds and releases rhythms of sacred song.

Majesty unfurls in mounting swell,

Splendor befits You.

You awaken the dawn,

And we live.

With earth’s new day

We approach our last,

To meet Him who breathed us to life,

And died with dripping arms extending unending life.

He who is

Victorious,

And unblemished

By sin’s beastly hunger, evil’s heinous snarl, or pride’s loathsome swagger.

Soon and coming King,

Untainted by earthly stain,

Unmoved by mankind’s strain,

Unmatched in honor.

Forever we will praise You.

Forever we will sing,

Worthy is the Lamb

Slain for us.

Blood-bought clothes enfold us,

With squinted eyes, we gasp.

Our tender-scarred Savior and justly-crowned LORD glistens in star-glowing glory.

Undiminished.

When you think of God’s greatness, what comes to your mind?

Below are a few Scriptures that inspired this poem. What Scriptures remind you of God’s glory?

Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:28-29 ESV

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Psalm 19:1 ESV

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works. Psalm 145:3-5 NIV

Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” Revelation 5:11-13 ESV

And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19:16 NKJV

  1. When you think of God’s greatness, what comes to your mind? What Scriptures remind you of God’s glory? >Genesis 1:1 KJV < This is the very first that comes to mind, but all of God's Words remind me of His glory.

    Every galaxy, every molecule,
Bows at Your command, < I love what you said here. How comforting are these words, awe inspiring. Thank you.

To God be all the glory…Amen!

    • Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reflections, Chebba. I agree, Genesis 1:1 (KJV) is a powerful verse. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Our existence, salvation, and hope all begin right here. And I also agree that God’s Word reminds me of His glory. May the Lord open the eyes of our hearts to see more of His glory wherever we may look. God bless you!

  2. Wow, Melissa, this poem is absolutely stunning in beauty and power. This made me want to shout,

“Your voice calls the universe to attention.

    Every galaxy, every molecule,

    Bows at Your command,”

You are gifted from the Lord indeed.

    God bless.

  5. Melissa, that is one of the most beautiful descriptors of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    • HALLELUJAH! Thank you, Mary Anne, for reading and sharing your reflections and encouragement. I really struggled to write this, as I find it difficult to assemble words that are great enough to describe Jesus, or worthy of His name. May He take our little childlike offerings and multiply them with His power. All glory to Him! Thank you again for reading and supporting me. God bless you!
