What does it mean that Satan has no claim on me?
Monday, March 17, 2025 by Melissa McLaughlin

“It’s mine!” he claimed.

“No, it’s mine!” she retorted.

With hands pulling, muscles straining, and teeth clenching, a tug of war ensued.

As an elementary school teacher, recess often included resolving ownership disputes. With a little detective work, I would determine the rightful owner, request apologies, and redirect students to neutral playground equipment supplied by the school.

When we claim something or someone, we express ownership or rights. For example, we may claim dependents on our taxes, claim our inheritance, claim our baggage at the airport, claim a plot of land, claim a rightful title, or claim to have something (i.e. that organization claims 1,000 members).

Interestingly, Jesus also talked about a claim in the Bible. With nuanced power, His divinity echoed through this small word.

What does it mean that Satan has no claim on me?

Join me for a closer look at this poignant account in the book of John.

In John 13, Jesus gathered with His disciples in the upper room for the Last Supper, a Passover feast (Matthew 26:17-29).

The story continues in John 14. Following the meal, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet and reiterated key teachings about His deity and impending crucifixion. The disciples questioned Jesus in confusion.

Jesus concluded His upper room discourse with these words:

I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. ~John 14:29-31 (ESV)

God allowed Satan control over the earth for a time (1 John 5:19), but Jesus proved His sovereign Lordship over Satan through His life, death, resurrection, and ascension.

With supreme authority, Jesus proclaimed Satan had no claim on Him. His righteous life gleamed in absolute perfection, unmarred by sin’s repulsive stench.

The father of lies, the devil, had no accusation to wield against Jesus. Christ strode toward His brutal death, embodying a divine dichotomy—a heavy heart and complete confidence.

Stunningly, Jesus declared the imminent battle with calm resolve. He understood the holiness of God and agreed with God’s execution of just judgment, or wrath, against evil and sin.

It was for this reason Jesus came. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8 ESV). Jesus came to redeem us from the hand of the enemy.

With clarity of mind and spirit, Jesus willingly took our place. The pure and spotless Lamb swallowed the putrid poison of our sin. The sinless One laid down His untainted body, now wracked with the wickedness of our rebellion.

His eyes of mercy looked up to heaven, then looked upon His accusers, then looked Satan square in the face. In that moment of terror, the future glory of God’s family gave Him joy.

Enduring agonizing pain, Jesus heart burst, “It is finished!” Heaven and earth resounded.

Jesus broke the power of sin, death, Satan, and hell. Though Satan thought he had Jesus’ back against the wall, Jesus arose from the grave. The Champion won!

Miracle of miracles, Jesus demolished Satan’s claim on us.

Though Satan had no claim on Christ, Satan did have a claim on you and me. The devil’s accusations about our transgressions before a Holy God were true. The terrifying truth is, because of our sin, Satan held us in his grip.

Mercifully, Jesus became sin for us. Then reached out with blood-soaked hands to offer His righteousness to all who will believe.

All claims against Jesus’ followers are dropped. In a sacred and eternal exchange, Jesus now claims us for the kingdom of God.

If you are in Christ, Satan has no claim over you. The Victorious One has made us victorious! We belong to Jesus forever!

When you have experienced overwhelming joy because of our victory in Christ?

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV
