What Does it Mean to be a Citizen of Heaven?

A Visitor

As my feet stepped down from the plane's stairway, a unique aroma of exotic spices and smoky charcoal fire greeted me. I had never smelled anything quite like that before.

My college friend had invited me to visit Egypt, and I was thrilled. We moved through the airport and into town. My eyes scanned the terrain. Unfamiliar sights bombarded me.

Everywhere I turned, people spoke an unknown language and dressed in beautiful garb unlike mine. Chickens and dogs meandered through the streets. Small businesses with brightly painted signs boasted artisan foods and crafts.

A woman balancing a large basket of fruit on her head passed by me. Our gaze connected. My eyes widened in awe of her skill. A sweet smile lit her face, and we grinned at each other. Without a word, humanity’s kindness flowed from heart to heart.

I was a foreigner. Other people and places had shaped my language, clothing, and perspective. Still, I loved the rare opportunity to experience this beautiful land and meet its lovely people, not yet known to me.

When I imagine heaven, I often wonder if it will feel like coming home, yet coming to a foreign and most exquisite land.

A Citizen of Heaven

What does it mean to be a citizen of heaven?

People obtain citizenship of an earthly country through birthright. Or through a legal process. Becoming a citizen includes both rights and responsibilities. When functioning properly, citizens have protection in their country. In return, people must contribute to and follow the laws of the nation.

Interestingly, there are many parallels to being a citizen of heaven.

To be a citizen of heaven, a person must be born again of God.

In John 3:5 (ESV), Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

How are we born again to receive our heavenly birthright?

Our heavenly birthright is a gift like no other. We believe and receive. Believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who died for our sins, and receive God’s gift of eternal life.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16 NKJV).

In Philippians 3:20 (ESV) we read, “ But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Jesus is our Savior and Lord. His kingdom is not of this world, so our highest allegiance is not to an earthly government or nation, but to Christ.

What benefits do citizens of heaven receive?

Through faith in Christ, God makes us new, raises us up, seats us in heavenly places, and welcomes us as members of His household.

Ephesians 2:4-6 (ESV) - But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—  and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:19 (ESV) - So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.

One big difference is the payment. Christ purchased our birthright with His own blood. We can only stand before God in righteousness and become children of the Most High if Jesus’s blood cleanses our sins. We are blood-bought children of the King.

Ephesians 2:13 (ESV) - But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

John 1:12 (ESV) - But to all who did receive him [Jesus], who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

From dusty earthen treks to heavenly victory dances. From hunching down in the sin-stained darkness of Satan’s basement realm to sitting with the Father in the angelic light of His celestial throne room. That’s our citizenship story.

What responsibilities do citizens of heaven have?

Here are three of the many responsibilities listed in the Bible for followers of Christ.

1.To glorify God and enjoy His goodness. He has given us what no one else could.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9 ESV).

2.To grow more like Christ. We do this not to earn our salvation, but out of unending gratitude to the One who did.

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV).

3.To make disciples. Like God, we want to see others basking in the blessings of heaven.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20 ESV).

As we walk in the ultimate protection of our citizenship in the kingdom of God, may we radiate Christ’s light and point others to the shining city that is to come.

May we always remember: the brightness of every sunrise, the vibrant hues in every flower, the weight of the oceans, and the majesty of the mountains are only a shadow of the glory to come. Of all people, no matter what we face, we exude a most glorious hope!

What do you love about being a citizen of heaven?

Hebrews 11:8-10 (NIV) - By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

I'm so thankful to have citizenship in heaven where there's no need for the Sun or lamps because the glory of God and Jesus will provide the light. Love your points for our responsibilities as citizens of heaven. God bless.

Excellent piece! Sometimes we focus on the benefits of being a Christian, forgetting that we have work to do, too—modeling his Kingdom, sharing the Gospel and making disciples, etc. Well done.

Amen, Jessica! So true. We are saved and blessed by Jesus! But, He also calls us to partner with Him in His kingdom work. Blessings to you!

I like the idea of keeping my heavenly passport up to date. It's the only one that really matters and it was earned by the blood of our Savior.

I love that idea, too. Though we walk on this earth, may we keep our eyes on our eternal destination.

I try to keep my heavenly passport up to date and proves my citizenship. Great message Melissa and glad we will all be together in heaven someday.

I love that analogy, Yvonne! That's a good one, especially for you, as a world traveler. Yes, can't wait to be together in heaven with you, our family of God, and our Savior! Bless you, sis!
