The End of the Line with Jesus
Monday, August 25, 2025 by Melissa A. McLaughlin

By Melissa McLaughlin

Growing up, I remember hearing the phrase, “that’s the end of the line for you.” Perhaps as my parents hosed down a bees' nest from our front porch. Or when I swatted a pesky mosquito, bringing about its swift death.

During a recent Bible study, this phrase took on new meaning for me.

The End of the Davidic Kingly Line

An often-overlooked ruler from the line of David is Jehoiachin. Though he reigned as king of Judah for only three months, Scripture records this of Jehoiachin, “And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father had done" (2 Kings 24:9).

I find it remarkable that a ruler could receive such a negative comment in such a short time. Unfortunately, to gain this description, Jehoiachin simply followed the idolatrous practices already rampant in Judah.

Jehoiachin, also known as Jeconiah or Coniah, was the nineteenth king of Judah. The account of his quick demise can be found in 2 Kings 24:8-17, 2 Chronicles 36:9-10, and Jeremiah 52:31-34.

Jehoiachin took the throne at eighteen years old. After three short months, Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon, conquered Jerusalem. He captured the leaders and most of the population of Judah. As a result, Babylon took the Israelites as exiles. Only the poorest remained.

Jehoiachin spent thirty-seven years as a captive in Babylon. During that time, Nebuchadnezzar II installed his uncle Hezekiah as a vassal king until Jerusalem completely fell to Babylon. The Babylonians destroyed the temple and the walls surrounding Jerusalem.

Mercifully, after thirty-seven long and dismal years of imprisonment, Nebuchadnezzar’s successor, Evil-merodach, released Jehoiachin and spoke kindly of him.

2 Kings 25:28-30 (ESV) states, "And he [Evil-merodach] spoke kindly to him [Jehoiachin] and gave him a seat above the seats of the kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put off his prison garments. And every day of his life he dined regularly at the king's table, and for his allowance, a regular allowance was given him by the king, according to his daily needs, as long as he lived.”

Interestingly, even though the line of kings from David's family ended with Jehoiachin, Matthew 1:11-12 included his name in the genealogy of Jesus.

What does this biblical account teach about God?

1. God is righteous and just.

God’s righteous rulings and just judgments will be executed. God sent many prophets warning His people of the consequences for their idolatry, rebellion, and lack of repentance. Their Babylonian captivity fulfilled the prophecies.

2. God remembers His promises.

Jesus’ ancestry, from the line of King David, includes Jehoiachin. God brought the Messiah through the Davidic line, despite Jehoiachin's (and others') failures. God keeps His promises.

3. God extends mercy.

Although Jehoiachin deserved captivity in Babylon, God granted mercy and favor in a distant land. Jehoiachin’s life included both failure and redemption. With God, there is always hope. Even in this place of destruction and judgment, a glimmer of hope sparked for Israel’s future redemption.

What does this Bible story mean for you and me?

1. God’s righteousness and justice will come to pass.

Though we see opposition to God’s rule in our world today, there will come a Day, when God will bring about His complete and perfect judgment. We can release any hurt and injustice to the Lord. When Christ returns, all will be made right.

2. God remembers us.

God remembers us even more than a mother who nurses her baby (Isaiah 49:15-16). As Christians, God will fulfill His promises in our lives for His kingdom work. His purpose endures forever.

3.God is merciful.

Have you messed up? Found yourself in a pit of your own making? Return to the Lord. He is gracious and merciful. He waits with open arms for the prodigal sinner. At one point or another, that is every one of us.

What’s at the end of the line for you?

Do you feel like you're in an impossible situation of total despair?

Do you feel like you’re imprisoned because of the consequences of your sin or someone else’s sin?

I hope this message encouraged your heart. It may be “the end of the line” in earthly terms, but with God, there is always hope.

God is still forgiving.

God is still redeeming.

God is still restoring sinners like me and like you.

Mercifully for believers, the end of the line is Jesus. And there is no better ending!

What Bible story helps you have hope in tough times?

Philippians 1:6 (ESV) - And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
