Our eyes gazed at the crackling flames. Cool evening air filled our lungs. A stony fire pit encircled the flickering light against the inky night sky.
Our arms stretched toward the hot coals. Bending low, we held marshmallows on sticks near the heat. The warmth wrapped our bodies like a blanket. A smoky smell of charcoal wafted toward us.
After several minutes, toasted marshmallows with gooey centers melted in our mouths. Dancing flames reflected on our smiling faces as we ate.
We licked the sticky marshmallow residue off our fingers. A vigorous wipe removed some of the stickiness from the sticks. Poking the sticks back into the bright blaze, the flames licked off the remainder, purifying the sticks.
With warm bodies and bellies, we leaned back in our lawn chairs and breathed out. Sparks popped and flames glistened. We rested in stillness. Relaxing with the mesmerizing show of a backyard fire.
This recent experience outdoors reminded me of the many biblical illustrations of God’s Spirit as fire.
God first revealed Himself to Moses as fire in Exodus.
And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed (Exodus 3:2 ESV).
In this encounter, fire represented God’s presence, power, and holiness.
Similarly, God chose a fiery form as a tangible expression of His presence when leading His people through the wilderness.
And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night (Exodus 13:21 ESV).
In the New Testament, John the Baptist referenced fire when announcing the Messiah.
I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire (Luke 3:16 ESV).
Later, on the day of Pentecost, the indwelling Spirit rested on Christ’s followers like fire.
And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:3-4 ESV).
In the Old Testament, fire from heaven consumed offerings placed on the altar (Leviticus 9:24). In the same way, we now offer our bodies and lives to the Lord as a living sacrifice, purified by the Spirit’s fire (Romans 12:1).
Thankfully, when the Spirit of God indwells believers’ hearts (Acts 2:38), His presence, power, and holiness empower us to live a life worthy of His name.
Fire provides life-giving comfort, bringing light, warmth, and purification into our lives. When camping on a dark night, a firelight’s radiance enables us to see our surroundings and protects us from the harmful cold. In addition, we use fire to sanitize cooking utensils and medical tools and to cook food so it is safe to consume.
In the same manner, God’s word is a lamp for our feet as we walk in this dark world. Jesus is the unfaltering light that illuminates and protects. His indwelling Spirit warms our hearts and purifies our lives of sin.
However, the frightening side of fire is that it can also be destructive. Similarly, God’s Word warns of His judgment, like fire, against sin and evil.
With soberness, we remember that our Savior promised to return one day in glory. Our choices will be tested and exposed by His fire (1 Corinthians 3:13). And all who are not found in Christ’s book of life, by faith in Him, will be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15).
This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels (2 Thessalonians 1:7 NIV).
Incredibly, the God of all eternity reaches for us with nail-scarred hands. He outshines our darkness, surrounds us with the warmth of His love, and burns away the rebellion of our sin.
Our Holy God has done it all. In exchange for faith in Christ and His sacrifice for our sins, we receive Jesus’ unmarred righteousness instead.
Yet, may we never take God’s mercy for granted. With reverent gratitude, we recognize that one day, the grace we accepted in this life will allow us to spend eternity in His glory. With fervent hearts, we pray for more to run to Jesus and grab hold of His extravagant offer of salvation.
Oh God, let our hearts burn for you alone. For our God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29 ESV).
May the Lord light up your life anew!
