What Did the Angels Say at Christmas? Part 2

I reached into the mailbox. Bills, cards, and sales flyers overflowed. As I walked into the house, my hands flipped through the holiday sales circulars. Dazzling images of discounted door-busters caught my attention.

My eyes scanned the pages, hoping to find affordable Christmas gifts for family and friends. While closing the door behind me, I called out to my husband with a bright voice, “You should see some of these sales ads. Best prices yet.”

He glanced up from the kitchen table. “Anything we’re actually looking for?”

A giggle tumbled out. “Well, not necessarily.” I grinned back. “But it’s hard not to get excited about these great prices. Even the kids are keeping me posted about the deals.”

I paused to consider our discussion about sales. Who doesn’t love a good sale? We share news about a sale like wildfire across a thirsty land.

Why then do I sometimes feel shy about sharing the good news of Jesus?

Good News of Great Joy For All the People

Last week, we reflected on the biblical account of Christ’s birth recorded in Luke 2. When the angels visited, their first words, “Fear not,” spoke volumes to the shepherds shivering at their otherworldly appearance.

However, the words that followed resonated with a profound message.

In Luke 2:10 we read, “And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”

Imagine the shepherds. Day after day, they cared for the animals. Leading them to food, water, and shelter. Watching and protecting them from predators. Walking, leading, resting. Then doing it again. And again.

Then, on that special night, piercing through the mundane, the angels brought good news of great joy for all the people.

Was there a sale on shepherds' staffs or sandals? Did local merchants offer buy-one-get-one-free deals on blankets or tents?

No, the angels shared news from the heavenly realms. News from God’s word. News from God’s heart. News that fulfilled prophecies from long ago.

God’s redemption plan was reaching the fullness of time.

Humanity lay waiting for the Messiah, the Savior, to appease and reconcile the sin-debt from Eden’s fall.

God waited for the perfect moment to send the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.

Heaven and earth waited. Then God moved.

No other news like this. Ever before. Ever again.

The glory of heaven broke through to earth. The Light of the world split the darkness. And we are changed.

Best of all, this news wasn’t just for the shepherds. It wasn’t just for Mary and Joseph. It wasn’t just for the Israelites. It was the news of salvation through faith in Christ, for all people. For all who will believe.

Though the angels revealed God’s plan to a few lowly shepherds, the news rippled on through history. Incredibly, this good news ripples through us today.

Let’s not be shy. Let’s not fear. For we have good news of great joy to share with all people. Christ our Savior is born. He atoned for our sins and restored us to Eden’s fair family.

We have everlasting hope and joy. Let’s share the good news!

What Scriptures remind you to share the good news that Jesus saves?

Melissa, I’m sitting in the ICU waiting room, Mike’s open heart surgery is today. I read him a lot of “fear not” scriptures early this morning. And even these from the account of Jesus birth. Because God is with us now and always,

Dear Karen, my husband and I have been praying for Mike, and for you and your family. May He do a great miracle of healing, in Jesus' name. May He blanket you all with His peace, my dear friend.

"I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be for all people. For unto you is born this day, in the City of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord!" ... All heaven was excited as God's plan was unfolding.

With all the shopping and holiday crazies filling our minds, we so often forget the REAL reason we celebrate Christmas. As you say, "We share news about a sale like wildfire across a thirsty land." Yet what about the Gospel? Thanks for this important reminder.

Thank you, Jessica, for the many ways you share about Christ. May God keep opening doors for us to talk about Jesus, and may we be ready to share the good news!

Just to think about an angel speaking to us is so amazing. I’m sure I would be filled with fear. Thanks for this lovely message. Merry Christmas Melissa

God is truly awesome, and He has done awesome things. Even sending angels! But greatest of all, He restored us to a right standing through Christ. Merry Christmas, Yvonne!
