3 Prayers of Gratitude

By Melissa McLaughlin

“Thank you.” Two small words. Common words. Not eloquent or clever. Yet, these simple expressions of gratitude echo long in our hearts and memories.

When my husband or children say “thank you” for the dinner I prepared.

When the store clerk says “thank you” for helping bag the groceries.

When a friend or loved one says “thank you” for calling or visiting.

These words of gratitude recognize the efforts we made to bless, help, and uplift. Although the tasks were not undertaken to receive thanks, words of thanks honor the other person's kindness and sacrifice.

Yet, gratitude goes deeper still. Words of thanksgiving connect hearts.

One person receives the love being offered by conveying thanks. The other person receives love for the offering they gave, as they hear the words of thanks.

Two strands of love tied together with gratitude.

Likewise, we strengthen our heart’s connection with God as we express gratitude for His many blessings.

Gratitude softens our hearts toward God as we recall His protection and provision in the past. In addition, gratitude builds our faith as we remember all God has done in the past. Communicating thanks also renews our hope for the future as we recognize God’s fulfillment of His promises.

Here are 3 prayers of gratitude to reconnect your heart to Christ today.

1.Prayer of Gratitude for Blessings in the Past

Heavenly Father, thank you for your steadfast love and faithfulness. We are grateful for the gift of life and our measure of health. As we look back over the years, we see countless ways you protected us from harm. Physical, emotional, and spiritual. Help us remember every small blessing of protection and provision that brought healing, hope, and strength.

You swooped in, snatching us from the grip of the enemy, then lifted us to new heights. You hid us in the shelter of your wings, like a mighty eagle protecting her eaglets. Holy Spirit, grant us fresh vision, restoring memories of your gentle hand of grace that guided us ever closer to Christ through the years.

Let our hearts overflow with joyful thanksgiving! You are the God who redeems all that was lost and broken. You are the Author of our lives, who rewrites our story with the blood-red ink of Jesus. In Christ, you are making us new. In His name, forever we give thanks! Amen.

2.Prayer of Gratitude for Blessings in the Present

Father God, thank you for the gift of today. We are grateful to be alive and walking with you! Thank you for shelter, food, water, clothing, friends, family, and our church family. As we breathe in and out, let us be mindful of your sustaining hand upon our lives. Each heartbeat, a gift from you.

Holy Spirit, open our eyes to see your blessings all around. From the shining sun in morning to the shimmering stars at night. Every blade of grass under our feet, every oak tree and dandelion scattered across the land, displays your unmatched glory. Let us pause throughout the day and behold your divine fingerprints.

Thank you for calling us closer to Christ as you illuminate your Word. May your truth and wisdom part the seas of doubt and confusion and flood our souls with your sparkling-clear living water.

As we remember our Savior’s sacrificial love poured out on the cross, may we move toward Him again today. Let us not hold back. Let love surge afresh in our hearts for Jesus. Let us run! Into your arms of mercy. Into your forgiving embrace. Into your Shepherd’s fold.

Thank you, Jesus, for holding us close to your heart this day. In your name. Amen.

3.Prayer of Gratitude for Blessings in the Future

Almighty God, we praise you. For you are King of the universe and Lord of all eternity! Thank you for bending down low. You saw our desperate need and saved us through the finished work of Christ.

Because of Jesus, our names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Our eternal home is sure. Where evil and sin will be vanquished. No more tears, sorrow, sickness, pain, or death. There, we will join the angels and worship around your throne in purity and holiness, O Savior. Singing songs of uncontainable praise!

May the joy of our salvation arise! May our gaze stay fixed on Jesus, our soon and coming King. Holy Spirit, anchor us with your peace and the hope of heaven. Radiate through us, casting a divine light over the world’s dank darkness.

For in Christ, we find forgiveness for our past, guidance for our present, and security for our future. Forever we are grateful, Jesus! In your matchless name. Amen.

What are you thanking God for today?

I like how you added prayers for both blessings now and to come. It reminds me how God's love, mercy, grace, peace, etc,. are all past, present and future tense. I pray our gratitude is too!

I am "thankful" (grateful) for my brother lifting me up when he is the one who has lung cancer. He is making me laugh and rejoice at simple things every day, where I would be crying instead. Thank YOU, LORD, for making my brother trust in YOU, trust he is going to heaven and is excited about it.

Wow. Chebba, what a testimony. May God continue to move in powerful ways through your brother's life and faith. That is a great blessing. Praying for healing and strength.

Hey There. I enjoyed your recent ‘3 Prayers of Gratitude’, especially the part where you said of God ‘snatching’ in the first prayer. Blessings
