A Tiny Crack of Light

I stepped into the bedroom to grab my sneakers. My eyes darted back and forth as I searched.

Suddenly, an unexpected sight caught my attention.

A small, glowing shape illuminated the green laundry basket in the corner. My curiosity piqued.

I bent down for a closer look. My eyes squinted. “What is that?” I wondered. “Did someone spill neon yellow paint on the laundry basket?”

The laundry basket appeared to radiate with a glow-in-the-dark paint blob. My hand reached forward to touch the luminous rectangle.

After closer examination, I realized it was a patch of light. The bedroom door stood open at the perfect angle. A shaft of morning sunshine from a hallway window beamed through the slender crack between the door and doorframe near the hinges. Just a tiny crack was all it took to transform the appearance of the laundry basket.

I giggled to myself. Mystery solved.

Yet, I wondered at the marvelous attributes of light.

The Power of Light

From millions of miles away, the sun’s light streamed through our window, then pierced through a minuscule crack near the door hinge, casting a flaming spotlight onto another object. A light so brilliant it changed the object’s appearance.

The Power of God

I couldn’t help but think about God’s greatness—the One who created light and darkness, the Creator who set the sun aflame. Almighty God designed the sun with perfect precision to provide light and heat necessary for life on Earth.

Although we depend on the sun for survival, the sun’s light is so overwhelmingly bright, we cannot stare at it without damaging our eyes. Further, the sun’s heat is so intense, solids or liquids cannot exist on its surface. Only gaseous atoms.

When we consider the immeasurable power of the sun, how much greater is the power of the One who made such things?

Foolishly, we nonchalantly think we can approach the holy God who made these unapproachable objects in our universe.

Much like the sun, the Bible makes clear, we cannot be near God in our present form, or we would die (Exodus 33:20). We need God’s life-giving provision even for our next breath. However, we cannot comprehend or reach His infinite preeminence.

Transformed by the Light

Miraculously, despite that immense power, in His mercy, God seeks the tiniest cracks in our hearts to illuminate and transform the darkness of our mortal lives into something divine. All it takes is a tiny crack of light to unleash the floodgates of God’s abounding luminescence.

The Maker of heaven and earth did the unthinkable. Taking the form of a man, He absorbed both our sin and its just penalty. Then Christ offered His righteousness and His indwelling Spirit to all who believe.

Incredibly, He is making us like Himself—sons and daughters of the Most High God. And one day we shall see Him face to face in all His glory.

When we stand before the Son of God, that skinny crack of light we see now will expand to something more dazzling than the sun’s splendor. And we shall be changed.

May the light of His Presence inflame our hearts anew as we await that great day!

Ephesians 5:8 ESV – For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.

1 Corinthians 15:51-53 ESV – Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
