I squinted through my smudged glasses. A tiny splinter had lodged in my index finger. In a rush, I grabbed a needle and tweezers. Dust, streaks, and fingerprints coated my lenses and clouded my vision. Titling my head to get the best view, I poked and prodded.
In my impatience, I suppressed the urge to stop and clean my glasses. I just wanted the splinter out.
Foolishly, I persisted with my googly-eyed efforts. Gasps and grunts escaped my lips as my skin burned red with irritation.
My haphazard gouging accomplished nothing. Only a sore finger.
Finally, I admitted the truth. My success depended on clearer vision.
I laid down the needle and tweezers, removed my glasses, and reached for the lens cleaner. A few squirts splashed on the lenses. The fresh smell of sanitizing solution drifted toward me. My fingers circled, polishing the glasses with a lens cloth until they sparkled like crystal goblets at a dignitaries’ dinner.
I put my glasses back on. Instantly, the room took on a sharper image, as if seeing again for the first time.
I refocused. My eyes zeroed in. I gripped the splinter and removed it in an instant. A smile lit my face.
Pausing to clean my lenses restored my eyesight and enabled me to complete my task. Why didn’t I do that sooner?
At that moment, I thought of our spiritual vision and how Christ’s cleansing helps us see clearly.
Given the impurities, indulgence, and self-centered perspective of our culture, we need daily washing of our minds and spiritual vision to see our world as Jesus does.
1.Clearer Vision Through God’s Word.
As we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit illuminates God’s Word to purify our minds and reset our thoughts on God and His ways. Viewing life through the lens of God’s goodness, holiness, and truth, we gain a brighter outlook and renewed hope, despite the difficulties we may face.
Psalm 119:18 (NIV) – Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.
Psalm 19:7-8 (NIV) – The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
2.Clearer Vision Through Knowing Christ.
Pausing each day to focus on Jesus and His sacrifice for our sins helps keep everything else in perspective. He alone offers salvation, cleansing of sin, and eternal life. As we invite Jesus to take center stage in our hearts, all else fades away.
Ephesians 1:17-19 (NIV) – I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
3.Clearer Vision Through Spending Time with Christ.
Daily, we must seek to walk with Jesus wherever He may lead. This includes stepping away from the crowds to spend time with Christ alone, so He can heal us and help us see clearly.
Mark 8:22-25 (ESV) – Some people brought to him [Jesus] a blind man and begged him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
Please pray with me.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your steadfast love and faithfulness. With each sunrise, new mercies shine from your heart. Holy Spirit, remove the scales from our eyes. Help us behold the wonders of your Word and your mighty hand at work. Lord Jesus, wash away the dust and dirt that clings to us from evil within and without. Renew our minds and restore our vision with your truth, mercy, and grace. Let us not view others as walking trees, but as treasured people made in the image of God. People that you died to save. Light our way. Help us follow in your footsteps and radiate your goodness. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
What Scriptures help clarify your spiritual vision?
Psalm 36:9 (NKJV) – In Your light we see light.
John 8:12 (ESV) – Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Would you like to draw closer to Christ and experience the cleansing of His Word? Are you looking for a fresh way to read the Bible? Or maybe you’d like to be reminded of Jesus woven throughout the Scriptures.
