3 Ways to Keep a High View of God
Monday, June 30, 2025 by Melissa McLaughlin

My small hands reached for the steering wheel. I turned the wheel an inch or two and leaned my body to the side, swerving with the imaginary curve in the road. The steering wheel jiggled back and forth. Engine revving sounds roared from my mouth as my feet stretched toward the gas pedal.

I looked up at my dad and smiled. His eyes sparkled as he grinned back. Giggles broke out in the parked car.

As a child, I loved pretending to drive the car. Though the vehicle never moved, a make-believe car ride brought thrills and laughter.

When I think of God, I wonder how often He looks at us similarly. We stretch our tiny efforts and flex our muscles at God, as if He needs our help.

Then those moments arise when we realize we are utterly helpless and hopeless without God.

Looking to God for Help

Circumstances crash down like an avalanche, obliterating all mirages of self-reliance. When the job slips away, the bills mount up, the diagnosis is grim, relationships fracture, and our well-made plans disintegrate. We fall to our knees and cry out to our only hope. Jesus.

Perhaps these moments are God’s mercy, too, however. When we come to the end of ourselves, we remember—we are not God. We do not command the universe. From dust we came, to dust we will return.

A high view of God reveals earthly wisdom based on divine truth. It is a gift to recognize God’s vast greatness and unrivaled power. The result of uncommon faith.

When we grasp God’s preeminence and sovereign rule over all, we are in the best position to comprehend ourselves, the world, and our role in it.

But how do we keep a high view of God?

Here are 3 ways to keep a high view of God.

1. Pause and marvel at God’s creation.

May we slow down our pace and stop long enough to gaze with childlike wonder at nature. God made a world that displays majestic beauty, glorious patterns, and interdependence beyond our comprehension.

Pause now and visualize these miracles:

  • The dandelion head transforms from a sunny yellow flower to a perfect sphere of fluffy seeds. Have you looked at the remarkable precision in this little seed-globe lately? How could a living plant form such a delicate wonder? The endless strivings of man cannot halt the dandelions’ blooming.

  • The stars that light the night sky shine down from millions of light-years away. Yet despite that incredible distance, we cannot miss their twinkling brightness, ordered constellations, and galactic clusters, which provide direction and mark the times and seasons. How great is the Creator who set countless stars in the inky black skies?

I invite you to stop right now and look out your window. What wonders do you see? God made that.

2. Believe God’s Word

I once heard a sermon where the pastor reminded us that everything in life hinges on four words: “In the beginning, God.”

God is. God was. God always will be. God alone is God. Every molecule of the visible world was designed by the invisible God. And His Word is final.

Amazingly, the Most High God has given us the Bible, so we can know Him as He defines Himself. Not as we imagine or wish Him to be. But as He truly is.

The second way to hold a high view of God is to believe His Word. Not just believe "in" God. But to believe Him.

When we open the Bible, may God’s matchless power echo through our souls. May His piercing Word sever the ridiculous blindfolds we use, attempting to lower God to our level. By the power of the indwelling Spirit, may we see anew this awesome Creator, Sustainer, Provider, Savior, and King.

3. Pray for God’s view of ourselves.

Finally, let us pray and ask the Lord to show us His view of ourselves. We have intrinsic value because we are made in God’s image and are fearfully and wonderfully shaped by His hands. In addition, God sent Christ to die an agonizing death for our sins, to save us and fill us with His Spirit. No one loves us more than the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

However, we also recall that without Christ, we are nothing. We have nothing to offer except the sin that required Jesus’s atoning blood. God made us from the dust of the earth, and to dust we will return.

Yet, by God’s unfathomable grace, He redeemed us at an unthinkable cost to Himself. Mercifully, He uses believers for His kingdom work on earth, until He brings us to our heavenly home.

Because of God, we have life and breath.

Because of Jesus, we have forgiveness of sins and an inheritance in heaven.

Because of the Holy Spirit, we have the power to believe and live for Christ. Not to earn our salvation, but out of unending gratitude for the One who did.

Gracious Lord, reset our vision again today, so we can keep a high view of You, the Eternal and Most High God. For there is none like You!

Isaiah 40:25-26 (NIV) - “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these?

He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

Isaiah 40:8 (ESV) - The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

Isaiah 45:22 (ESV) - Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

Melissa, I love this article. I celebrate all your "because's" and hold them to be near and dear to my heart. Amen to this, "When we grasp God’s preeminence and sovereign rule over all, we are in the best position to comprehend ourselves, the world, and our role in it."

Karen, thank you for your heart of passion for the Lord and your desire to know Him in all His fullness. I can tell each of these "because's" are near and dear to your heart. May God enlarge our vision and our hearts to view more of the expansive greatness of our great God!

So good, Melissa. I also wonder if God sees us the way we do little kids... like, "Oh, how cute. They think they can control that!" I've come to realize I am truly nothing without God. I am beyond blessed that He even considers me!

Reply by: Melissa McLaughlin

I totally agree, Jessica! I cannot imagine how silly I must look at times. Yet, God lovingly and graciously leads me on, in His best ways. I love your words: I am beyond blessed that He even considers me!
