How Does the Light of Christ Change Your Heart?

Our backyard looked like a tundra. A winter storm had dumped a foot of snow. The final few inches of precipitation turned to sleet, leaving a layer of ice that froze everything in place.

The next morning, we rushed to the windows to gaze at the snow-swept scenery. Our eyes scanned the ground around our home. We squinted at the brightness. The landscape glistened. An icy sheen reflected the sunlight like an enormous, shiny mirror.

My husband bundled up, wrapping his scarf snugly around his neck. When he opened the door, piercing winds whipped through the house. He closed the door and trudged outside to refill the bird feeders. His boots crunched as he heaved his legs through the snow piles and ice mounds.

The simple trek to the bird feeders looked like an Arctic expedition.

It felt like months, but in a few weeks, the sheets of ice in our yard melted. Not overnight, but bit by bit. As the days grew longer and sunlight beamed with pre-spring strength, we noticed drops of water dripping from icicles on our deck railing. Drip, drip, drip. This tiny sound reminded us of the sun’s power.

The sun’s light and warmth transformed immovable icy heaps and frozen blocks into fresh running water, revitalizing the earth for spring.

No amount of human effort, spreading rock salt or hacking at the ice with snow shovels, could accomplish the widespread melting provided by the sunlight. Unstoppable. Unmatched. All-pervasive. Provided by the hand of God.

This ice-melting memory caused me to consider the transformative power of Christ’s light.

In John 8:12 (ESV), Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

We may wonder why Jesus described Himself this way. In meditating on this Scripture truth, it is helpful to consider the natural world.

What does light provide in our world?

When we think about light, several outcomes come to mind.

Light provides:

  1. Illumination/brightness/day
  2. Warmth/melting
  3. Life/growth
  4. Purifying
  5. Hardening

Interestingly, Brittanica offers this fascinating excerpt about light:

No single answer to the question “What is light?” satisfies the many contexts in which light is experienced, explored, and exploited. The physicist is interested in the physical properties of light, the artist in an aesthetic appreciation of the visual world. Through the sense of sight, light is a primary tool for perceiving the world and communicating within it. Light from the sun warms the earth, drives global weather patterns, and initiates the life-sustaining process of photosynthesis. On the grandest scale, light’s interactions with matter have helped shape the structure of the universe. Indeed, light provides a window on the universe, from cosmological to atomic scales.

This definition sounds almost divine, doesn’t it? We can easily recognize the many ways Christ is like the light.

When we meditate on Jesus’s metaphor of light as a descriptor of Himself, it is no wonder that light is all-encompassing in our existence. Just like the Son.

So, perhaps a more important question remains. How does the light of Christ change your heart?

Here are some ways Christ can change our hearts.

  • Do we allow His Word to illuminate our lives and lead us in paths of righteousness? Does His Word also shine a spotlight into our souls, revealing the darkness of sin that might hide in secret places we cannot see ourselves?

  • Do we allow the warmth of Christ’s sacrificial gift of salvation to melt our hearts, causing us to be open to Him, humble, merciful, and grateful?

  • Do we seek the Son the way young plants in spring stretch toward the light for their source of life, nourishment, and strength?

  • Do we allow the penetrating light of the Spirit to convict us and purify us, in the same way the sun acts as a disinfectant for water and other materials?

  • Or does the light of Christ cause our hearts to harden like clay bricks baked in the summer sun, because of our desire to tell God what to do?

How do we respond to this great light of Christ?

When we apply these experiences from nature to our spiritual lives, we discover some clear truths.

Although the sun stays the same:

  • Ice melts in response to the sun’s light and warmth.
  • But, clay hardens in response to the sun.

The sun does not change. Instead, the response to the sun’s qualities depends on the material.

Despite the hard-heartedness we see in the world, may the materials within us allow our hearts to keep melting for Jesus.

Prayer:

Jesus, light of the world, shine afresh on me like the morning sun on a new day. Create in me a new heart, a softened heart. Let Your Word light my path and the Spirit’s warmth radiate through me. Help me keep reaching for You. Let me remember Your unimaginable sacrifice to pay for my sins and Your resurrection power to restore me to God’s family. Melt my heart for You, Jesus.

Your words are profound - "The sun does not change. Instead, the response to the sun’s qualities depends on the material." Such truth here. God does not change. But we who believe MUST and do change in the light of his love and grace.

Melissa, this is a beautiful analogy. Your descriptive verbs painted the picture for us to experience. I love your reflective questions and the prayer at the end. I do want God's light and the warmth of His salvation to melt my heart toward Him and others--to ignite me to share the light and gospel.
