Let the Wind of God's Spirit Sweep Over You
Monday, February 23, 2026 by Melissa McLaughlin

Another heavy snow blanketed our region in billows of white. My husband and I awoke and hurried to the windows for a closer look. I turned on the coffeemaker, and the smell of hazelnut roast wafted toward us. Our hands gripped warm mugs of steaming coffee as we gazed at the backyard. Buried under eight inches of fluff, the earth looked like a marshmallow wonderland.

Bushes appeared as large white bunnies. Milky robes draped the tree branches. Birds poked for seeds through the crystal white carpet covering the ground.

At first glance, the scenery brought serenity, stillness, and peace. However, high winds soon picked up. The pine trees swayed and tossed their snow-laden boughs.

Some of the pines bent low to the earth, like a weary mother carrying her sleeping child. In previous snowstorms, a few large branches broke off the trees in our yard, leaving a gaping hole in the verdant pine.

These majestic evergreens had graced our property since soon after we moved in. They grew alongside our children, with life and beauty. It grieved my heart when branches broke, as if someone had whisked away a part of our family memories.

I listened as the wind howled. My eyes scanned the trees. Would they survive the whipping torrent?

A giant gust lifted the branches. The boughs bounced down with a loud thump. The clinging snow released its grip. A white pile plopped on the ground under the pine trees.

In a surprising twist, the harsh wind brought the pines a welcome purging. The weight lifted, and they rebounded. No broken boughs. The pine branches now returned to their former regal position, reaching out and upward, offering refuge to the animals below. Like the pines, my heart lifted as I witnessed God’s intervention and protection.

This fierce dance in nature’s forces caused me to think of God’s Spirit at work in our lives.

In John 3:8 (NIV), Jesus said, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

This verse reminds us that although we cannot see the wind or the Holy Spirit, we can see the effects of their power.

So, what does the Holy Spirit do in our lives?

Here are 3 ways the Holy Spirit sweeps through our lives:

1.The Holy Spirit confirms our position as sons and daughters of God.

“The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” –Romans 8:16

From this place of confidence based on our identity in Christ, we walk in the assurance of His grace, truth, and love. We have authentic hope to offer a sin-sick and hurting world.

2.The Holy Spirit cleanses and sanctifies us.

He convicts us of sin and strengthens us to walk in holiness like Jesus. He purifies our lives to reflect our marvelous Savior.

When he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. – John 16:8

God chose you … to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit. –2 Thessalonians 2:13

3.The Holy Spirit renews us and transforms us as He illuminates the Scriptures and writes God’s word on our hearts.

He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. –Titus 3:5

“I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. –Jeremiah 31:33

How can we let the wind of God’s Spirit sweep over us?

When we yield ourselves to the mighty wind of God’s Spirit, He can lift us up when we feel downtrodden. By reading His Word and communing with God in prayer, the Holy Spirit can renew our Christlike identity, position, and character. As we abide in Christ, He sets us free from nonbiblical thought patterns, selfish ambitions, and sinful habits that cling to us like wet snow. Day after day, He restores, reshapes, and remakes us into the person He created us to be. A sparkling reflection of the Son, yet as unique and wonderful as each snowflake.

Have you invited God’s Spirit to blow through your life anew?

Pray with me:

Holy Spirit, thank you for opening my eyes to see Jesus and to receive His incredible gift of salvation. Though my sins are like crimson, the Savior washed them whiter than snow. Blow through my life and sweep away stagnant or sinful habits. Set me free from everything that is weighing me down or holding me back from Jesus. Breathe afresh on me. May my faith be ever green, extending a branch of hope to a weary world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Here in Oklahoma, it is rare that the wind does not blow at least a little. Those winds are strong in Spring and can wipe up wildfires. I too think of the Holy Spirit on days like that. Great message Melissa

Thank you for sharing about the Holy Spirit. I listened to the wind howling in the trees recently. I checked outside to see if our garden flags and feeders were still standing. Those things stood secured in the ground. I pray we all stand firm in the love of God and shine His light.

Thank you for sharing your recent experiences with the winter winds. And what a wonderful analogy! May we stand secure, rooted in Christ's love. God bless!
