How is the Holy Spirit Like a Dove?

After a long day of chores and yard work, my husband and I flopped down outside on patio chairs. We relaxed there on the porch, with two glasses of ice water on the table nearby. Cool evening air brushed our faces. The smell of fresh-cut grass drifted toward us from the lawn.

The sun sank low, casting burnt-orange hues across the sky. From the shadowy rooftop of our neighbor’s house, we noticed the outline of a dove. We watched in stillness.

Soon, the dove lifted its voice. The soft coo reverberated a calm and soothing song. We soaked in the tenderness of God’s creative gift through nature.

Listening to the dove's peaceful melody reminded me of the Bible's description of the Holy Spirit as a dove.

In previous posts, we considered the Holy Spirit like wind and like fire. In this post, we will meditate on the Holy Spirit like a dove.

How is the Holy Spirit Like a Dove?

Jesus’s Baptism

In the New Testament, all four gospels record the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus like a dove at His baptism (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, John 1:32).

Though the Holy Spirit is not visible, at this pivotal event marking the commencement of Jesus’s earthly ministry, He took on the form of a dove. The dove represented purity and innocence. In addition, the Spirit’s tangible appearance signified God’s presence with and approval of Jesus.

Innocent as Doves

Later, Jesus encouraged His disciples saying, “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16 ESV). This further identified the dove as untainted and harmless.

Doves as a Sin Offering

Interestingly, in the Old Testament, doves were considered clean and acceptable as an offering for sin. Leviticus 14:22 (ESV) states, "Also two turtledoves or two pigeons, whichever he can afford. The one shall be a sin offering and the other a burnt offering.”

Since Christ later became our ultimate sacrifice for sin, the dove provides another fitting representation of the Holy Spirit.

Doves as a Symbol of Peace

The account of Noah and the flood in Genesis 6-8 records a famous example of the dove as a symbol of peace. God spared Noah, his family, and the animals from the destruction of wicked people who rebelled against the Lord. After the water had covered the earth for many days, Noah released a dove to check for dry land. The dove returned with an olive branch, showing that the waters had receded (Genesis 8:11).

Once God purged the earth of evil, the olive branch and the dove represented peace with God and mankind.

Jesus is our Prince of Peace

In a culminating and incredible sacrifice on the cross, Jesus brought spiritual reconciliation between God and mankind through His shed blood. Only through faith in Christ do we have true and lasting peace.

Whenever we hear the comforting sound of cooing doves, may it remind us of the Holy Spirit, our Great Comforter. May the cleansing and purifying power of the indwelling Spirit make us pure and innocent as doves. Then, our praise to God will be a sweet song rising to heaven like a dove.

Daily, we thank Jesus, who gave Himself as a faultless offering for sin. Through His unimaginable and selfless act, He purchased for us eternal restoration with our Creator. May our hearts overflow with gratitude, propelling us to tell others in this broken world about Christ’s extravagant offer of salvation and peace with God.

A peace that passes all understanding.

Have you ever thought of the Holy Spirit as a dove in your life?

And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. Mark 1:10 ESV

This was really thought provoking! I have thought of the Spirit as a dove because of Scripture but never thought of him in MY life like a dove. I will now. What a neat perspective!

Beautiful, Melissa. These scriptures are a great reminder of the Holy Spirit. Doves usually make me think of these passages of the Bible. Thank you for your teaching here and on the Holy Spirit in all the articles. God bless.
