Why God Made Us For Himself

The Creator God

The sky sparkled like a crystal-clear lake. Crisp air filled my lungs. The smell of fallen leaves and autumn earth drifted all around. Sunshine gleamed through the branches of our burning bush, setting it aglow in crimson red.

In every direction, the magnificence of God’s creation dazzled my eyes.

Vast, vivid, alive, and glorious.

While standing in our backyard, amid the marvels of God’s handiwork, my own life appeared small, common, finite, and insignificant.

I wondered, “With all this brilliance and power, God, why would you make me?”

As I pondered this question, God’s loving care stilled my heart.

“God, You made me… for Yourself.

You are bringing me… to Yourself.

And You hold me all the days in between.”

Why God Made Us For Himself

The profound notion of God’s greatness and His great love for me flooded my soul.

How amazing is this? The Triune God of all eternity—God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit—was completely fulfilled in Himself. The Lord does not need humanity. Yet He made us to know Him, honor Him, love and enjoy Him.

Astonishingly, the Creator of the universe created me in His image. I am fearfully and wonderfully made—by the hands of God.

Then, like Adam and Eve, He invites you and me to walk with Him in a close, unhindered relationship. However, to maintain His integrity and still reconcile sinners back to Himself, Christ poured out His blood on the cross to atone for our sins and make us new creations.

Born again of His Spirit. Washed in heaven’s pure blood. Made worthy of heaven’s perfection.

Incredibly, the God who gave me life offers eternal life in Christ. For His pleasure and so I can take pleasure in Him.

God, the Creator, is a creative being. Out of love, He chose to create us—

  • for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11, Colossians 1:16)
  • to show His glory and power (Psalm 139:13-14, Isaiah 43:7)
  • to reflect His image (Genesis 1:27)
  • to display His mercy, grace, and love (1 Peter 2:9, Ephesians 2:4-7, 1 John 4:9)
  • to accomplish good works through us (Ephesians 2:10)
  • so we can take pleasure in knowing Him by being born again and becoming children of God (John 1:12-13)
  • and so we can enjoy a relationship with our good Father. Forever. (John 3:16)

To Glorify God and Enjoy Him Forever

A famous quote from the Westminster Catechism encapsulates these Scripture truths.

“What is the chief end of man?
Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever.”

To glorify God means to worship Him and reflect His beauty and goodness through our lives.

Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! (Psalm 115:1 ESV).

Through faith in Jesus, we receive salvation, and our relationship with God is restored. With His blood, Jesus crushed the wall of sin that separated us from our loving Father. We walk with God again in sweet communion, like the springtime of Eden’s garden.

In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11 ESV).

Jesus taught, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11 ESV).

A beautiful God created us for something beautiful: His glory and our joy.

I encourage you to take a moment to step outside and behold the splendor of God. Day after day, nature testifies to our matchless and wonderful Almighty God. Whether in the bee’s busy collection of pollen or the silky petals on the seasonal flowers, the majestic trees towering high or the endless sky painted like a masterpiece each morning.

Then step back and remember that the same God made you. He is bringing you to Himself. And holding you all the days in between.

Today, may we give glory to God as we feast on His word, sing His praises, and find our greatest joy just being in His presence.

What helps you remember why God made you?

All things have been created through him and for him (Colossians 1:16 ESV).

We love Him because He first loved us (1 John 4:19 NKJV).

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9 ESV).

The Lord set his love on you and chose you… because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers (Deuteronomy 7:7-8 ESV).

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10 ESV).

God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us…made us alive together with Christ…so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:4-7 ESV).

Amen, Melissa. God made us for Himself for many wonderful reasons. I especially like the section where you ask us to take a moment to behold God's splendor. Then you remind us that God made us, too. How precious we are to Him and He to us.

So true, Stephen. These simple things are so profound, sometimes we walk right by and forget how wonderful God is and how precious we are to Him. God bless you!

This and all the other verses used speak to my heart: The Lord set his love on you and chose you… because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers (Deuteronomy 7:7-8 ESV).
