By Melissa McLaughlin
At age nine, a power failure felt more like an adventure than an annoyance. When the power went out and the house grew dark, my parents lit an antique oil lamp, a small family heirloom from my grandparents. The golden flame cast a gentle glow around the room.
I recall turning the knob to raise the wick. Soft light emanating from the oil lamp brought a relaxing ambiance to the kitchen.
The wick absorbed oil from the fount (also called font or fuel tank) at the bottom of the lamp. My parents threaded the wick through the wick winder (or raiser). Then the wick was lit at the top. A glass tube called a chimney surrounded and protected the flame.
Although oil lamps and lanterns come in many shapes and designs, one key component is oil. Without oil, the wick will burn out.
This simple truth reminds me of how oil symbolizes God’s Spirit in Scripture.
In previous weeks, we reflected on ways the Holy Spirit is like wind, fire, and a dove. Today, we will consider how God’s Spirit is like oil.
In the Old Testament, oil was used to anoint kings, priests, and prophets. The oil represented God’s divine appointment and consecration, as well as His Spirit working in and through the person. When the prophet Samuel anointed David as king, the event clearly illustrated this point.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:13 NKJV).
Interestingly, the words Christ or Messiah mean “Anointed One or Chosen One.” Jesus confirms this truth in Luke 4:17-21.
Later in Acts 10:38 (ESV), we read, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.”
In this passage, Scripture describes Jesus’s anointing with the Holy Spirit and with power, rather than a physical anointing, which furthers the understanding of the Holy Spirit like an anointing oil.
Oil was a critical element for life in ancient times, just as today. People needed oil for cooking and nourishment, and they associated it with abundance and blessings (Psalm 23:5).
Oil was used to soothe wounds and promote healing. In one of Jesus’s parables, the good Samaritan administered oil as a healing agent to help the injured man (Luke 10:34).
Furthermore, in contrast to times of sorrow when people applied ashes to their foreheads, people used oil for moisturizing and to brighten their faces in celebration (Psalm 104:15).
Likewise, the Holy Spirit nourishes, heals, comforts, and uplifts us so we radiate the goodness of God from the inside out.
In the Old Testament, God required oil to maintain ongoing light for worship in the Tabernacle (Exodus 27:20-21). This represented the steadfastness of God’s presence and truth.
Similarly, Jesus taught spiritual truths with metaphors about light.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house (Matthew 5:14-15 ESV).
In the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus used oil to symbolize the Holy Spirit and inward preparedness. The wise virgins, who brought extra oil for their lamps, represent those who are filled with the Spirit and ready to meet Christ. Sadly, the foolish virgins, who did not take time to refill their oil, represent those who know about Christ’s coming but lack God’s Spirit.
Throughout the Bible, oil represents the incredible, multifaceted nature of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God, like oil in Scripture, illuminates His presence, anointing, and empowerment at work in all who are born again.
Similar to how the oil in a lamp needs replenishment to keep the flame burning, we must seek to be filled afresh by the Holy Spirit as we spend time in intimate communion with God in prayer, Bible reading, and worship.
Without personal time spent with the Lord, we fizzle out.
We return to the fount again and again. There the Holy Spirit refills and nourishes us through His Word, refreshes our hearts with the joy of the Lord, heals our wounds with His soothing balm, and restores our blessed hope in our soon and coming King. Only through regular refueling from God’s Spirit can believers keep shining Christ’s glorious light in this dark world.
Holy Spirit, reignite our hearts with Christ’s luminescent light, love, and grace!
What helps you think of the Holy Spirit like oil? What helps you stay refilled with the Spirit?
“Now it is God who strengthens us together with you in Christ and who anointed us, is putting his seal of ownership on us, and putting his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22 HCSB).
