Grateful as the Falling Leaves

By Melissa McLaughlin

Grateful as the falling leaves

Releasing their tiny grip

In joyful abandon

Tumbling free

Following the wind’s touch

Lighting darkened alleys

With splashes of orange, red, yellow, and brown

Piling high in gutters and ditches

Filling the world with remembrance…

What once was living,

though now dead,

is still moving

Announcing God’s glory.

In death,

adding life,

nourishing soil for those who come next.

So, we go

from new life to old,

from glory to glory,

age to age.

Like the falling leaves

Though outwardly wasting away

Inwardly made brand new.

In grateful surrender

Yielding to the Maker’s season

Shining ever brighter

Faces aglow with heaven’s Light

Awaiting the dawn

of a new Day.

From fresh spring rain

To sultry summer sun

To whipping winds of autumn

To winter’s end

We are grateful and unfettered as the falling leaves.

For the One who made the Tree of Life

Hung there

In stillness and death

To rise again

Shedding this world’s sin.

So one Day

We will gather with Him

And forever we will sing.

Worthy is the Lamb!

Until then may we be

Grateful as the falling leaves

following the Maker’s plan

Released

Surrendered

2 Corinthians 4:16-18Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
